15 May 2009 - Flying Start Sports Business (technology, service or product related) Programme, 8th – 10th June 2009

In conjunction with the University of Wolverhampton, the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship is offering a FREE national Sports Business (technology, service or product related)’ Programme for final year students, postgraduates and graduates (within five years of completing their studies) with a business concept or idea they want to develop and launch within 12 months.

The FlyingStart Programme begins with a 3-day course at the Molineux, Wolverhampton Wonderers Stadium, on the 8th, 9th, 10th June 2009.

Candidates must be currently studying or graduated from a Sports or technology related subject or have a product or service or process idea which is technology or sports related.

The main aim is to have graduates trading or growing businesses with 12 months. The Programme ensures that all new graduate businesses:

• Understand the business model - how to make money
• Have a ready-made national and regional network;
• Have a dedicated mentor and business support;
• Understand the ‘know-hows’ and ‘know-whos’ of practical business.

The Programme will take up to 30 participants, and provide the one-to-one mentoring, support and training needed to turn every idea into a business. It is customised to suit the needs of each participant and individual one-to-one mentoring is provided free for a full 12 months following the course.

The programme is completely free to participants and includes:

• 3-day residential course where participants acquire business skills and build their contacts network;
• personalised 1-2-1 mentoring – support and guidance for 12 months;
• focused follow up meetings where participants can receive further help.

The deadline for all applications is 17:00 on Monday 25th May 2009.

Arising from an error in the processing of a paper by Paul Ewart, Testing the Unconventional; The Ergonomic Paddle Shaft ( Paul Ewart, Johan Verbeek), for the Biarritz conference it only appeared in draft form in the conference proceedings. For the convenience of the delegates at the conference, the correct final form of the paper has been made available on the website.

 

4 March 2009 - SportSURF workshop on 'Maintaining Performance of Synthetic Surfaces'

Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed at the sport surface industry and the wider related community, including: Sport surface Suppliers and Manufacturers; Consultants; Contractors; Architects; Owner/operators; Funders, National Governing Bodies, Researchers, Users, and other parties interested in sport surface science and behaviour.

The SportSURF network is in its fourth year of existence, and currently has approximately 280 members and a further 150 contacts in its community. In the initial 3 year subsidised period it ran or co-hosted twelve events that directly impacted on over 800 attendees, inaugurated a new sport surfaces conference in 2007 and helped catalyse many new research projects.

18 December 2008 - Sports Engineering Student Project Competition 2008

The competition was open to graduates from undergraduate degree programmes of years 2007 and 2008 at any institution of the higher education in the world, who have undertaken an individual project on a sports engineering topic.

1st Prize was won by Heather Driscoll who studied Sports Engineering at the University of Bath (UK), for her project entitled ' Development of a low cost wind tunnel to measure the effect of cricket ball condition on movement through the air ' Hether takes the prize of a cheque for £100 and full membership of the ISEA for one year. Heather is now extending this work as a PhD student at Sheffield Hallam University (UK).

2nd Prize was won by Rabi Guthrie of the University of Brighton (UK) for his project entitled "Customisable mountain bike stem". Rabi wins a certificate plus one year ISEA membership.

 

12 December 2008 - New Sports Engineering MSc launched at Sheffield Hallam University, UK

Engineering the next Olympic Games

The Sports Engineering Group at Sheffield Hallam University are pleased to announce the launch of the UK’s first MSc in Sports Engineering. Starting in September ’09, this one year course has been developed in consultation with leading companies and organisations from the sports industry.

The course is primarily aimed at graduates from the fields of engineering and the physical sciences. It will develop student’s engineering skills in relation to the sporting environment and will include modules in biomechanics and physiology. The MSc has a strong focus on research and students will undertake a major, industry linked research project under the supervision of some of the most respected academics in the field. The MSc aims to provide the perfect springboard for employment within the sports industry, or for further study at PhD level.

Applications for the course are now being processed. Two, course specific scholarships are available to all applicants and these will be awarded on academic grounds. It is envisaged that at least one graduating student will be offered the opportunity to stay within the research group through a funded PhD. 28 February 2008 - Sports Engineering Student Project Competition 2007

The competition was open to graduates from undergraduate degree programmes of years 2006 and 2007 at any institution of the higher education in the world, who have undertaken an individual project on a sports engineering topic.

1st Prize was won by Nils Betzler who studied at Department of Sports Science, Otto-von-Guericke Universitat Magdeburg, Germany, for his project entitled 'Biomechanical Characteristics of Golf Swings' and takes the prize of a cheque for £100 and together full membership of the ISEA for one year. Nils is now extending this work as a PhD student at Napier University, Edinburgh (UK), funded by R&R Rules Ltd., St Andrews.

2nd Prize was won by Ben Charles a student at the University of Bath, UK for his project entitled 'Analysis of Beach Casting Method and Rod' and takes the prize will be a certificate and  full membership of the ISEA for one year.

General Information

Innovation is the crucial driving force in the world of sports technology. In popular sports new devices and gadgets are an important means to improve turnover or open up new markets. In many competitive sports advanced technologies provide the cutting edge for success. And, most important of all, for certain target groups like senior citizens or handicapped people innovative developments are a precondition to gain access to the world of sports and movement at all.

To foster these developments, ispo – the sports community, the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), and the German Interdisciplinary Assocation for Sports Technology (divers) have established the ispo-TUM Academic Challenge Award, which will be awarded once every year during the Winter ispo. Eligible for this award will be all contributions from the world of sports technology that in one way or another combine innovativeness and systematic reasoning with practical relevance. Contributions must fit into either of the four categories health, popular and leisure sports, competitive sports, and research. Contributions will be accepted from students, researchers or other members of academic institutions world-wide.

The winners of the ispo-TUM Academic Challenge Award will be selected by an internationally assembled jury. The four winners of each category will be notified in early January 2008, and will be offered to exhibit their innovations free of charge at the Winter ispo 2008 (January 27 - 30). The overall winner will furthermore receive a prize of EURO 2,500. The awards will be handed over in a ceremony, and there will be extended press coverage of the event and the winning projects.

6th International Conference on Sports Engineering

ISEA Student Paper Competiton

The 6th Conference in July -2006 was held at Munich's Olympic Site of 1972, Germany. Organised by Eckehard Fozzy Moritz and the SportsKreastiveWerkstatt team, the four day Conference was held in the Olympic Hall, where 181 papers were presented to an approximate 370 delegates. 

The ISEA Student Award was presented to Laura Justham of Loughborough University, UK for her paper entitled "Quantification of the Cricket Bowling Delivery; a Study of Elite Players to Gauge Variability and Controllability".
